Chapter 8 - Packing Under Police EscortMonday morning arrived with a cold, damp drizzle sweeping in from the Atlantic.

At exactly 7:45 AM, two Collier County Sheriff’s deputies parked their cruiser at the curb of 442 Oak Ridge Lane, acting as a civil standby detail to ensure the eviction process proceeded without violence.

Vance was cursing under his breath as he dragged heavy plastic bins down the hallway, slamming them against the baseboards with childish fury. Chloe followed behind him, sniffling loudly, tossing her clothes haphazardly into suitcases while throwing murderous glares in my direction every time I walked past the open bedroom door.

“You’re a monster, Ryan,” Chloe spat out as she lugged a duffel bag toward the front door. “Karma is going to come back around and destroy you.”

“Karma is why you’re packing your bags right now instead of sleeping in a master bedroom you didn’t earn,” I said, leaning against the doorframe.

By 9:00 AM, the trunk and backseat of Vance’s sedan were stuffed to the absolute ceiling with their belongings. Vance climbed behind the wheel, his face dark with suppressed rage, while Chloe slammed the passenger door shut. The car roared out of the driveway, tires spitting gravel across the wet asphalt, leaving behind two empty bedrooms and a profound, glorious silence.

Dad remained seated in the armchair by the window, watching the sedan disappear down the street. He looked smaller, older, and utterly defeated.

“They’re gone,” Dad whispered, not looking at me. “Your mother is in jail. Your sister is homeless. Are you happy now, Ryan? Is your military pride satisfied?”

“My pride has nothing to do with this, Dad,” I said quietly, walking over to pick up my father’s empty coffee cup from the side table. “It’s about accountability. Something you forgot to teach your children.”
