A Crack in the Glass House / Chapter 8 / 20

Chapter 8 - THE HIDDEN DOSSIERBy 3:00 PM, I was back at the cabin. The autumn sun was dipping low, casting long, crimson shadows across the timber walls.

Inside, Mark was sitting at the dining table, surrounded by paper coffee cups. His eyes were hollow, rimmed with red. Lily was in the adjacent room with Helen, drawing quietly, still unaware of how close she had come to being taken away.

I sat down across from Mark and laid two folders on the table: the dossier Arthur Pendelton had given me in Seattle, and Ray Carter’s background check.

“Read them,” I said simply.

Mark picked up the Seattle file first. Page by page, his face drained of what little color remained. He read about Julian Pendelton’s sudden death, the brake failure, the forged psychological reports by Dr. Jonathan Reed, and the institutionalization of ten-year-old Leo.

“She… she did this before?” Mark whispered, his fingers shaking violently. “It’s the exact same medical terminology. The forms she tried to make me sign today for Lily… they’re almost word-for-word copies of the ones used on that boy in Seattle.”

“She’s a predator, Mark,” I said sternly. “She isolates grieving men, targets their children, creates a narrative of mental instability, and strips the family of its assets before moving on.”

Mark buried his face in his hands, a dry sob escaping his chest. “God forgive me, Thomas… I was so blind. I thought she was bringing order back to our lives. I thought I was protecting Lily…”

“If you want to protect her now, you need to wake up completely,” I pressed. “Where did she get the doctors here in Dallas?”

Mark looked up, horror dawning in his eyes. “She brought a private physician to the house two weeks ago—a Dr. Harrison. He said he was doing a routine pediatric checkup on Lily. Vanessa must have paid him off to sign the emergency evaluation order!”

Mark suddenly stood up, a surge of adrenaline washing over his exhaustion. “There’s more, Thomas. Yesterday, after you left, I was looking for the land deeds in the master bedroom safe. I found a hidden compartment behind the false back.”

He pulled a small, black USB flash drive from his pocket and set it on the table.

“What’s on it?” I asked.

“Medical files,” Mark said, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper. “Not for Lily. For Sarah.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Sarah?”

“Sarah’s toxicology reports from the night of her crash three years ago,” Mark said, tears spilling over his cheeks. “Sarah didn't just lose control of her car on the highway, Thomas. Her bloodwork showed trace amounts of a prescription sedative—a drug Sarah was never prescribed. And the doctor who ordered those specific blood tests three years ago? It was Dr. Harrison.”
