Chapter 12 - CONFRONTATION IN THE DARKBoth of them froze.

Dr. Harrison dropped a handful of files onto the floor, his face turning gray as paper ash drifted through the air. Vanessa spun around, her eyes widening in pure horror before narrowing into two slits of utter hatred.

“Thomas…” Harrison stammered, raising his hands slowly. “Listen to me… you don't understand what happened three years ago—”

“Shut up, Robert!” Vanessa barked, glaring at the doctor. She slowly took a step back toward the corner of the heavy oak desk. “He’s bluffing. He won't shoot.”

Mark stepped out from behind me, the iron tire iron held firmly in his hands. He stared at Harrison, his voice dripping with venom: “You poisoned my wife, Harrison. You gave her that sedative and called it a tragic accident. You let this witch destroy my life!”

“Mark… please,” Harrison pleaded, his voice breaking. “Vanessa had blackmail on me! She knew about my offshore accounts! I had no choice!”

“You had a choice,” I said coldly, stepping closer to keep Harrison pinned against the wall. “And you chose to murder an innocent mother.”

While my focus was on Harrison, Vanessa’s hand darted beneath the edge of the oak desk.

CLICK.

The room plunged into utter blackness as she slammed the master light switch on the desk panel.

“Mark, duck!” I shouted.

In the dark, a heavy glass lamp smashed against the floor near my feet. I heard the scuffle of feet sprinting toward the rear office door. Vanessa was making a run for the private executive elevator!

“I’ve got Harrison!” Mark roared in the dark, tackling the doctor to the ground with a loud crash of breaking furniture.

I charged forward through the dark suite, tracking the sound of Vanessa’s high heels clicking frantically down the marble corridor toward the private elevator bay.
