A Crack in the Glass House / Chapter 3 / 20

Chapter 3 - THE FOOTAGE THAT ACCUSEDMark frowned: “What are you talking about, Dad?”

“The camera,” I pointed toward the tripod. “It’s on. And that blinking red light means it’s been recording this whole time.”

A heavy silence fell over the room. The twenty guests shifted their eyes toward the corner.

In that exact moment, I locked my eyes on Vanessa.

Her face shifted. For a tenth of a second, her triumphant smirk cracked. The corners of her mouth tightened, and a flash of pure panic darted across her cold eyes. She quickly masked it, but that fleeting crack in her composure didn't escape me.

Mark walked swiftly over to the camera. He unlatched it from the tripod and flipped out the small LCD preview screen.

“Was it recording?” I asked, stepping closer while holding Lily’s hand tightly. She clung to me, hiding behind my leg, but a faint flicker of hope glinted in her eyes.

The adults crowded around Mark, suffocating curiosity filling the air.

“Yes… it’s been rolling,” Mark muttered, his voice beginning to shake. He hit stop and rewound the video about ten minutes.

The small screen played back the lively living room scene. Guests chatting, kids running past, relatives holding plates of food.

Everyone held their breath.

On the screen, Lily appeared. She walked out from the kitchen, passing the pedestal holding the crystal horse—she was nearly three feet away, never touching it. Lily walked straight up the stairs toward the second floor.

The room grew dead silent. Lily had clearly gone upstairs.

Five seconds after Lily disappeared off-camera, another figure stepped into the frame.

It was Vanessa.

She was holding a glass of red wine. She strolled casually toward the staircase, checking the room—everyone else was gathered around the dining table across the room looking at the birthday cake.

Vanessa stepped right up to the ebony pedestal.

It was no accident. The footage captured it in crystal-clear detail: Vanessa took a sip of her wine, then slowly and deliberately raised her left elbow, shoving the base of the crystal horse.

The three-thousand-dollar glass sculpture slid off the wooden edge, free-falling onto the floor.

CRASH!

The moment it shattered, Vanessa took a step back, gasped dramatically with a hand over her mouth, and turned toward the crowd, yelling, “What did you do?” as if she had just caught someone red-handed.

The video paused.

An appalling, total silence enveloped the entire mansion.

Twenty guests slowly turned to face Vanessa. The sympathetic looks they had held moments ago morphed into sheer shock, disgust, and contempt.

Mark stood frozen. His hands trembled so violently he nearly dropped the camera. His face turned as pale as a corpse, his eyes staring blankly at the woman he had shared his life with for the past two years.

“Vanessa…” Mark breathed, the air sucked completely out of his lungs. “What… what did you just do?”

Lily stood beside me. Tears still traced her cheeks, but her shoulders had stopped shaking. She stared at the camera, then at her father, and finally up at me.

“I told you I didn't touch it…” Lily whispered, her small voice cutting through the frozen room.

I squeezed my granddaughter’s hand and stared straight at Vanessa.

I expected a breakdown. An apology. A moment of shame.

Instead, Vanessa didn't cry. She didn't bow her head.

After a few brief seconds of being exposed, her face transformed. The panic vanished, replaced by a cold, sinister smirk. She stepped casually toward Mark and leaned into his ear, whispering loud enough for me to hear:

May you like

“You think I did this out of cruelty, Mark? Don't make a scene in front of our guests. You’d better check your bank account before you judge me.”

With that, she turned on her heel and walked up the stairs with calm, calculated posture, leaving Mark bewildered and the room simmering in outrage.
