Chapter 6 - The Perimeter Breach

The cockpit door swung inward with enough force to rattle the emergency oxygen masks dangling above the jumpseat.

Three men in slate-gray tactical uniforms stepped into the narrow flight deck. There were no unit patches on their shoulders, only matte black insignias and high-retention sidearms secured in thigh holsters. Leading them was a tall, broad-shouldered colonel with iron-gray hair cut into a strict high-and-tight, his eyes scanning the cabin instruments before locking dead onto the jumpseat.

Mark froze, his hands still resting lightly on the control yoke. “Wait! We just executed an emergency landing under direct escort by the 412th! This was authorized by—!”

The colonel held up a single gloved hand, cutting Mark off mid-sentence. His eyes didn't flicker toward the young first officer for even a second. Instead, he stepped past Mark, came to a sharp, textbook military halt directly in front of Pauline Sanders, and snapped off a crisp, flawless salute.

“Colonel Vance, Air Force Material Command,” the officer said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register that commanded immediate attention. “We received the priority secure burst code over the military satellite relay forty minutes ago, Widow Six. Glad to see your landing gear is still intact.”

Pauline did not flinch. She slowly tilted her head upward, offering a brief, respectful nod in return.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had to talk a panicked civilian regional crew out of a stall spin, Thomas,” Pauline replied smoothly, her voice calm and steady. “And frankly, your crash teams out here have gotten slower in your old age. It took you nearly three minutes to clear the active runway.”

Colonel Thomas gave a dry, humorless chuckle. “We weren't expecting experimental tactics from a commercial transport today, ma’am. Especially not from someone who officially retired from active flight status back in nineteen-ninety-two.”

Mark sat staring back and forth between them like a spectator at a tennis match. “Wait... retired in ninety-two? Colonel? Who is she? What is happening right now? We just landed an emergency medical diversion at a black-site military base, and you two are chatting like old college roommates!”

Colonel Thomas finally glanced down at Mark, his expression turning cold. “First Officer Jensen, your captain is currently being transferred to the base medical facility via stretcher. As for you and the rest of the passengers on SkyFlight 404, you have just entered a classified national security zone under emergency federal jurisdiction. Grab your flight bag, Lieutenant. Step out of the cockpit.”
