Chapter 3 - Shadows in the CloudsThe cockpit radio speaker sputtered again, the voice on the other end tighter, more urgent, demanding immediate tactical compliance.

“Commercial airliner 737-Echo-Delta, maintain your current heading of two-seven-zero and reduce speed to two-four-zero knots. You are currently tracking directly through restricted military training airspace. Acknowledge.”

Mark’s eyes widened in sheer terror. He fumbled with the civilian radio transceiver, his voice cracking over the microphone. “Mayday, Mayday! This is SkyFlight 404, we have an incapacitated captain, catastrophic engine failure on number one, and we are attempting an emergency diversion toward regional coordinates—!”

Before Mark could finish his distress transmission, the sky outside the left cockpit window suddenly transformed.

Two sleek, slate-gray fighter jets materialized out of the dense gray cloud deck as if they had been painted onto the atmosphere by an invisible brush. They flew with terrifying, synchronized precision, holding their position barely fifty yards off the commercial airliner's left wingtip.

Mark gasped, pressing his face against the cockpit glass. “F-35s... Lightning Twos. What are they doing here? We’re miles off the military corridor!”

Pauline leaned forward between the two seats, her sharp eyes studying the low-visibility markings on the belly of the lead stealth fighter. A subtle, knowing smile touched the corner of her lips—a fleeting expression of old muscle memory surfacing after decades of retirement.

The radio crackled again, cutting off Mark's frantic civilian chatter. The voice was calm, metallic, filtered through secure cryptographic scramblers, yet carried an unmistakable tone of tactical command.

“SkyFlight 404, be advised you are escorted by the 412th Test Wing out of Edwards. We have visual confirmation of your structural damage. Pilot in command, state your authenticating call sign and intentions immediately.”

Mark looked frantically back at Pauline. “They’re asking for our call sign! What do I tell them? I’m just a first officer on a domestic run!”

Pauline reached over Mark’s shoulder, her thumb pressing down firmly on the internal cockpit intercom toggle that routed her voice directly into the external aviation radio broadcast frequency.

“Give me the mic, Jensen,” she murmured.

Mark didn't argue. He surrendered the handheld aviation mic with shaking fingers.

Pauline keyed the transmission, her voice losing its grandmotherly warmth, replaced instantly by the cold, clipped, resonant cadence of a commanding officer who had spent thousands of hours barking operational orders across encrypted tactical channels.

“Lead F-35, this is commercial transport SkyFlight 404,” Pauline transmitted smoothly. “My authenticating call sign is Widow Six.”

Inside the cockpit, the radio went instantly, deafeningly silent.

Out on the left wing, the lead F-35 pilot didn't respond for three agonizing seconds. Then, the fighter’s control surfaces twitched as the pilot executed a sharp, textbook banking maneuver, sliding out slightly to get a better visual look through the commercial cockpit windows.
