Chapter 17 - The Unwritten Vow

A month later, on a crisp Saturday evening, we hosted a quiet, intimate dinner at our penthouse.

There were no high-society figures, no business rivals, and no ghosts from the past. Just Marla—Clara’s oldest and dearest friend from her college art days, who had stood by her through every storm—and a few trusted members of our inner circle.

Over artisanal wine and homemade Italian pasta, Marla raised her glass toward us with a beaming grin.

“To new beginnings,” Marla declared, her eyes sparkling with affection. “To art, to resilience, and to the absolute best couple in Manhattan.”

“To new beginnings,” Clara echoed, clinking her glass against mine.

The sound of crystal ringing out in the warm, candlelit dining room felt like a benediction. I looked around the table, realizing with sudden clarity that the empire I commanded no longer felt like a shield keeping enemies at bay; it was simply the quiet foundation that allowed us to live freely, honestly, and without fear.

After dinner, while Marla was admiring Clara’s latest desert paintings in the studio alcove, Clara stepped out onto the wide, wraparound balcony with me.

The city stretched out beneath us in a glittering cascade of lights, the distant hum of traffic feeling miles away.

Clara shivered slightly in the autumn breeze, and I instantly slipped my tailored wool jacket off my shoulders and placed it around hers.

“Cold?” I asked softly.

“Not at all,” she smiled, pulling the lapels close around her. She leaned her head against my shoulder, her fingers lacing through mine. “Adrian... do you remember what you said to me the night I came home from the hospital?”

I searched my memory, recalling every harrowing moment. “Which part?”

“You said nobody would ever touch me again,” she murmured, looking up into my eyes with absolute, unshakeable devotion. “You were right. But you don't have to carry the weight of that world alone anymore. We share the air now.”

May you like

I pulled her closer, pressing a gentle kiss into her hair. “Always.”
