Chapter 15 - Dawn Over Manhattan

By 5:00 a.m., the private jet had vanished into the eastern sky, carrying Julian toward a remote, inescapable destination from which no corporate lawyer or reserve fund could ever bail him out.

I drove back through the quiet streets of Manhattan, the first pale streaks of dawn painting the towering skyscrapers in shades of slate gray and gold.

When I unlocked the penthouse door, the apartment was warm, silent, and peaceful.

I walked quietly into the bedroom. Clara was still asleep, curled peacefully beneath the duvet, her breathing deep and even. The dark shadows of trauma that had haunted her eyes for weeks seemed to have softened in the quiet light of morning.

I sat down on the edge of the mattress, gently brushing a lock of hair from her forehead.

She stirred, her hazel eyes fluttering open. She looked up at me, sensing the weariness etched into my features, but also the profound, unshakeable calm that settled over my spirit.

“You were out late,” she whispered softly, her hand reaching up to touch my cheek.

“I had to tie up a loose end, sweetheart,” I answered, leaning into her warm touch. “It’s over now. Really over.”

Clara searched my eyes for a long moment, reading the truth in my expression. She pulled me down into an embrace, holding me with a quiet, fierce strength that grounded my soul.

The dark world I commanded would always exist at the edges of our lives, waiting in the shadows. But as the morning sun broke fully over the Manhattan skyline, casting a golden glow across our home, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:

No shadow would ever touch her again.
