Chapter 19 - The New Directive

Later that afternoon, sitting back at my desk in the base command headquarters, I drafted the final operational directive for the upcoming quarter.

My dual monitors displayed real-time tracking metrics for the Atlantic waterfront. There were no alarms, no frantic emergency alerts, and no hidden threats lurking in the shadows.

Instead, resting neatly in the corner of my desk was a framed photograph taken just days ago during a weekend visit—a picture of Gwen and me standing side-by-side on the old iron bridge in Ohio, both of us smiling toward the horizon without a trace of hesitation or regret.

For nineteen years, I had believed that wearing the uniform meant cutting off the past, building high walls, and carrying every burden in absolute isolation.

I had been wrong.

My career wasn't a rejection of my family anymore. It was the bridge that brought us back together.
