Chapter 16 - The Promotion Board

The crisp autumn air of Jacksonville had given way to the bright, humid warmth of early winter by the time the official notifications arrived from the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington.

It was a Tuesday morning when Captain Reynolds called me into his second-floor office overlooking the harbor basin.

Instead of the usual stack of maintenance logs or security incident reports, a single manila folder lay centered on his polished mahogany desk, marked with the crimson seal of the Department of the Navy.

“Take a seat, Commander,” Reynolds said, a rare, approving smile breaking across his weathered features.

I sat down, keeping my posture rigid and professional. “Sir?”

“The selection board for Captain convened last month,” Reynolds said, sliding the folder across the desk toward me. “Out of hundreds of surface warfare officers reviewed across the Atlantic Fleet, only a select few made the cut for promotion to O-6.”

I opened the folder. The official naval orders stared back at me in bold, unyielding type: Lieutenant Commander Corinne Vance is hereby promoted to the rank of Captain, United States Navy.

“Your handling of the Mayport security breach and subsequent dismantlement of the industrial espionage ring caught the attention of district command,” Reynolds continued, leaning back in his chair. “They needed someone who didn't just manage technical infrastructure, but who could maintain absolute operational integrity under extreme personal pressure.”

I traced my fingers over the official insignia on the orders, feeling a profound wave of validation wash over me. Nineteen years of missed holidays, relentless sacrifices, and unyielding discipline had led directly to this moment.

“Thank you, Captain,” I said, my voice steady, though my heart beat with a rare, victorious rhythm. “I won't let the command down.”
