Chapter 7 - THE MAN IN THE SUVThe SUV stopped at the end of the street.
Nobody got out.
Vanessa's hands were shaking.
“Who are they?”
“I told you. I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
She looked at me.
“I lied about a lot of things.”
“Then start telling the truth.”
She swallowed.
“Seven years ago, there was another baby.”
“The baby in the photograph.”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“That's what someone has been trying to find out.”
I froze.
“Why?”
“Because that child inherited something.”
“What?”
“Money.”
“How much?”
Vanessa stared at me.
“Enough to destroy several powerful people.”
Suddenly, the SUV doors opened.
Two men stepped out.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Take Lily and go upstairs.”
“What about you?”
“I'll distract them.”
“You're not walking out there.”
She looked at me.
“For the first time in seven years…”
Her voice cracked.
“I actually want to do something right.”
The front door suddenly shook.
BANG!
Lily screamed upstairs.
I ran toward the staircase.
Another impact hit the door.
