Chapter 5 - THE SECOND WATCHThe next morning, Grandma called me into her study.
She closed the door.
Then she locked it.
“You need to see something.”
She opened an old wooden box.
Inside were hospital documents.
Birth certificates.
Medical records.
And photographs.
I stared at the first photograph.
A newborn baby.
Lily.
Then Grandma placed another photograph beside it.
Another newborn.
Same hospital.
Same day.
I looked closer.
A tiny bracelet around the baby's wrist.
The name read:
LILY MORGAN.
My hands began shaking.
“That isn't possible.”
Grandma nodded.
“It happened.”
“Where is the other child?”
“We don't know.”
My heart stopped.
Then she pulled out another document.
A handwritten note.
Seven years old.
Signed by Vanessa.
I read it.
My hands went numb.
The note said:
If Eleanor ever discovers what happened, Daniel loses everything.
I looked up.
“Why did Vanessa write this?”
Grandma's expression became grim.
“Because she wasn't protecting Daniel.”
