Chapter 5 - The Fall of the ParasiteBy 9:45 AM, the hallway outside apartment 14B looked like a refugee camp for men who had lost their grip on reality.

Derek stood outside the double glass doors of the lobby, surrounded by three black plastic trash bags stuffed haphazardly with his wrinkled suits, a stack of sports betting magazines, and his box of personal toiletries. Passersby walking their dogs along the Edgewater promenade cast curious, judgmental glances at the pathetic pile of belongings.

Suzanne sat on her suitcase nearby, her phone pressed frantically to her ear as she tried for the fifth time to reach a low-end criminal defense attorney who wouldn't demand a hefty upfront retainer she couldn't afford.

“This is all your fault!” Suzanne shrieked, slamming her phone down onto her knee and glaring daggers at her brother. “If you hadn't been so arrogant—if you had just handled her properly instead of throwing tantrums like a toddler—we wouldn't be sitting on the sidewalk like stray dogs!”

Derek didn't yell back. He couldn't.

He sat slumped on a low concrete retaining wall, staring blankly at his polished leather shoes—shoes Skylar had bought him for their anniversary three years ago.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out sluggishly, expecting another automated notification from his overdrawn bank account. Instead, it was a text message alert from his employer’s human resources department:

“Dear Mr. Miller, please be advised that effective immediately, your corporate insurance sales license sponsorship has been placed on administrative suspension pending resolution of active felony domestic battery charges filed in Miami-Dade County. Return your company laptop and badge to regional headquarters by Monday morning.”

Derek stared at the glowing letters until they blurred together into a meaningless smear of light.

In less than forty-eight hours, he had lost his home, his wife, his income, his social standing, and his illusion of absolute invulnerability. He had believed that intimidation, manipulation, and violence were tools of power.

He was about to discover the terrifying truth of what happens when a parasite is finally ripped away from its host, leaving it completely exposed to the unforgiving elements.

And across town, sitting in the sunlit tranquility of Marcus Vance’s corner office overlooking the sparkling waters of Biscayne Bay, Skylar sipped her morning coffee, signed the final paperwork dissolving the last legal tether of her marriage, and smiled as she looked out toward a horizon that belonged entirely to her.
