Chapter 9 - The Jailhouse Visit

Two days later, I did something my legal team strongly advised against.

I asked Harrison to arrange a brief, fifteen-minute visitation with Julian at the Cook County Detention Facility before his formal arraignment hearing.

Harrison accompanied me, standing near the back wall of the sterile, glass-partitioned visitation room. The room smelled of industrial floor cleaner and stale air.

A heavy metal door clicked open, and a corrections officer led Julian to the metal stool on the other side of the thick glass wall.

The transformation was staggering.

The Vice President of Procurement who used to wear two-thousand-dollar bespoke suits and posture like a king in corporate boardrooms was gone. In his place sat a man in a faded yellow inmate jumpsuit, his hair unwashed, his jaw covered in rough stubble, and his hands shackled to a chain around his waist.

He picked up the black plastic telephone receiver with shaking hands.

I sat down, adjusted my jacket, and picked up my phone.

"Elena..." Julian rasped through the speaker. His voice was hollow, stripped of all its former booming arrogance. "Elena, please... you have to tell them to drop the domestic battery charges. The federal prosecutor is using the assault charge to claim I used physical violence to conceal corporate fraud. They’re looking at ten to fifteen years, Elena!"

I looked at him through the thick glass, feeling no rage, no bitter satisfaction, and no lingering affection. I felt only a profound, crystalline detachment.

"I didn't give them the assault charges, Julian," I said calmly through the receiver. "You gave them to them when you raised your hand against me. Dr. Mercer’s forensic report documented the exact angle of the blow that split my cheek, and the X-rays proved you broke my ring finger in two places."

"I was stressed!" Julian wept, pressing his forehead against the glass. "You don't know what it was like! Victoria was threatening to pull her company's backing if I didn't give her those scoring sheets! I was trapped!"

"You weren't trapped, Julian. You were greedy," I corrected him softly. "You wanted the luxury cars, the penthouse suite meetings, the ego boost of a younger mistress, and the multi-million-dollar kickbacks. You thought I was too weak, too submissive, and too afraid to ever stand up to you."

Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "What do you want, Elena? I’ll sign the divorce papers! I’ll give you the house, the accounts, everything! Just tell Harrison to withdraw the SEC affidavit!"

I looked at my left hand resting flat against the metal counter. The fiberglass splint was still rigid around my ring finger, a physical reminder of the night my old life died.

"The SEC affidavit is a federal record now, Julian," I said, my voice cold as ice. "It belongs to the United States Government. And as for the divorce... my sister has already drafted the final decree. You will sign it without contesting a single clause, or we will introduce the financial records of every dollar you spent on Victoria Vance as stolen marital assets."

Julian stared at me, his mouth open, realizing with absolute, terrifying finality that he had zero leverage left.

"You're a monster," he whispered into the phone.

I offered him a tiny, serene smile.

"No, Julian," I replied, hanging up the receiver. "I'm just the woman who finally stopped apologizing for your crimes."

May you like

I stood up, turned my back on him, and walked out of the visitation room as he began to beat his shackled fists against the glass.
