Chapter 17 - The Unbroken Circle

In mid-May, I returned to Charleston—the historic coastal city where Julian and I had spent our honeymoon eight years ago, and where I had bought the silver picture frame that he had turned facedown on our dresser the night I caught him.

I didn't go back to haunt myself with memories. I went back to reclaim the space.

I stayed at a quiet, independent boutique hotel near the battery, far away from the mega-resorts and corporate conference centers. I spent my mornings walking along the cobblestone streets, sketching the wrought-iron gates and blooming jasmine in my sketchbook, and my afternoons sitting on the sea wall listening to the waves crash against the stone.

One evening, as the sun dipped low beneath the water, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of violet, amber, and indigo, I walked out to the end of the wooden pier.

The breeze was cool, carrying the salty scent of the ocean.

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. Inside lay the severed platinum wedding band that Dr. Mercer’s team had cut from my ring finger in the urgent care clinic. I had kept it in my drawer for months, an unread artifact of a life I no longer lived.

I picked up the two curved pieces of platinum. They felt surprisingly light in my palm.

For years, I had believed that ring represented a sacred covenant—a vow of protection, mutual respect, and lifelong devotion. But Julian had turned it into a collar, using it to demand my silence while he built a tower of fraud and violence.

I held the broken metal over the edge of the pier, looked out at the vast, open ocean, and let my fingers open.

The two silver pieces fell through the dusk air, splashing quietly into the deep dark water below, swallowed instantly by the tide.

I didn't shed a tear. I pulled my hands back into my pockets, turned around, and walked back toward the warm lights of the city, feeling lighter with every single step.
