Chapter 3: The Doctor Who Never Examined Her

By morning, the false medical report had reached the Ashford legal team.

The doctor named on the document was Dr. Samuel Crowe, a private psychiatrist who treated wealthy executives and public figures.

At first, Dr. Crowe denied knowing Richard.

Then Daniel’s investigators found six payments from Vale Development to a consulting firm owned by Crowe’s brother.

By noon, the doctor had hired an attorney.

Emily remained in the hospital while the investigation expanded.

She watched from her bed as financial experts moved in and out of the private conference room. Every hour brought another discovery.

Richard had created a detailed plan.

First, he would establish a history of emotional instability.

Then he would claim Emily’s pregnancy had worsened her condition.

Finally, he would petition the court for temporary control over marital assets while she received “treatment.”

He believed she had inherited a modest trust.

He had no idea the trust was connected to Ashford Global.

“He didn’t know how much you owned,” Charles said.

“He didn’t need to,” Emily replied. “He believed anything I owned should belong to him.”

A temporary hearing was scheduled three days later.

Richard’s attorneys argued that the frozen accounts were destroying hundreds of jobs. They claimed Emily was using her family’s influence to punish her husband for an affair.

Richard arrived at the courthouse wearing a dark suit.

He walked through a crowd of reporters with his head high, pretending the cameras proved he was still important.

Emily entered through a private entrance.

She wore a simple navy maternity dress. Her hair was tied back, and her face showed none of the panic Richard expected.

When she entered the courtroom, Richard turned toward her.

For one second, his old confidence returned.

He believed she would look at him and remember the man she had married.

Emily walked past him without slowing down.

The hearing began.

Richard’s attorney rose first.

“This case is not about fraud,” he said. “It is about a powerful family using its resources to destroy a man because of a private marital dispute.”

Emily’s attorney, Sarah Whitmore, remained seated.

She did not interrupt.

Richard’s attorney continued.

“Mr. Vale acknowledges that his marriage suffered. He acknowledges an inappropriate relationship. But infidelity does not justify shutting down a company and placing hundreds of employees at risk.”

The judge looked toward Sarah.

“Your response?”

Sarah stood.

“Ashford Global did not shut down Vale Development. It withdrew financial guarantees after discovering that Mr. Vale had diverted company funds, forged his wife’s signature and fabricated medical records to gain control of assets he did not own.”

She placed three folders on the evidence table.

Richard’s smile disappeared.

Sarah called Daniel as the first witness.

He explained how Ashford Global had quietly guaranteed Vale Development’s loans after Emily requested help during Richard’s first financial crisis.

“Did Mr. Vale know Emily arranged the guarantees?” Sarah asked.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Ms. Ashford asked us to keep her involvement confidential.”

“Why?”

“She wanted her husband’s success to belong to him.”

Several reporters lowered their heads to take notes.

Richard stared at Emily.

For the first time, he understood the full extent of what she had done for him.

She had not merely saved his first company.

She had protected his pride while doing it.

Sarah introduced the forged authorization form.

Then she introduced the false medical report.

Finally, she played Vanessa’s recording.

Richard’s own voice filled the courtroom.

“Then she becomes the confused pregnant wife who made mistakes while under stress.”

The judge’s expression hardened.

Richard leaned toward his attorney.

The attorney whispered something back, but Richard shook his head.

When the recording ended, Sarah called Dr. Crowe.

The psychiatrist entered through a side door.

Richard went pale.

Under oath, Crowe admitted he had never examined Emily.

He claimed Richard had told him the document was needed for an internal insurance matter. He admitted accepting payment but denied understanding how the report would be used.

Sarah displayed an email Richard had sent him.

Once the baby arrives, I need her declared incapable of managing financial decisions.

The courtroom fell silent.

Emily felt her daughter move beneath her ribs.

Richard looked toward her.

His face was no longer arrogant.

It was desperate.

During a brief recess, he approached her in the hallway.

Daniel stepped between them.

“I only need one minute,” Richard said.

Emily nodded to Daniel.

“Let him speak.”

Richard looked around the hallway.

Reporters waited behind a security barrier. Attorneys spoke quietly near the elevators.

His voice dropped.

“I never planned for things to go this far.”

Emily stared at him.

“You paid a doctor to declare me incapable.”

“I was afraid you would leave.”

“So you tried to take away my right to leave.”

“I made mistakes.”

“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary.”

Her eyes remained steady.

“You built a prison on paper.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You’re enjoying this.”

“No.”

Emily’s answer was immediate.

“I’m grieving the person I thought you were.”

For a moment, shame crossed his face.

Then it vanished.

“What about our daughter?”

“You will answer for what you did before we discuss what place you deserve in her life.”

“You can’t keep my child from me.”

“I can protect her from someone who uses love as leverage.”

Richard stepped closer.

Daniel immediately moved forward.

Before either man could speak, Emily gripped the wall.

A sharp pain moved across her abdomen.

She inhaled.

Richard stared at her.

“Emily?”

Another pain followed.

Stronger.

Daniel caught her arm.

“Call the medical team.”

The courtroom doors opened as staff rushed into the hallway.

Emily tried to breathe slowly.

It was too early.

Her doctor had warned her that prolonged stress could trigger labor.

Richard took another step.

“I’m coming with her.”

“No,” Emily said.

“Emily, I’m the father.”

She looked directly at him.

“And right now, you are the reason she may be arriving early.”

The medical team guided her toward the elevator.

Richard remained behind.

As the doors began to close, Sarah entered the hallway holding a new court order.

The judge had frozen all of Richard’s personal assets.

He was prohibited from contacting Emily outside the presence of attorneys.

And based on the evidence presented that morning, the court had referred the forged medical report for criminal prosecution.

The elevator doors closed.

Richard turned toward his attorney.

“What happens now?”

His attorney looked at the order.

“Now?”

May you like

He exhaled slowly.

“Now you should prepare to be arrested.”
