Chapter 2: The Woman Who Kept the Receipts

Richard was escorted back into the mansion through the side entrance.

Two investigators waited inside his office while another photographed the open safe.

Richard kept his shoulders straight.

He refused to look frightened.

“I want my attorney,” he said.

“You’re not under arrest,” replied Special Agent Claire Bennett. “We’re securing financial records connected to an active fraud investigation.”

“This is my home.”

Claire glanced at the deed resting on the desk.

“According to the county records, it belongs to Ashford Private Properties.”

Richard’s mouth tightened.

He had forgotten about the deed.

For three years, he had paid the utilities, hosted parties and introduced the estate as his own.

He had never once asked why the property taxes were paid through a holding company.

He had assumed it was another clever arrangement made by his accountants.

He had assumed many things.

Claire placed a document in front of him.

“Did you authorize this transfer?”

Richard looked down.

Twelve million dollars.

Emily’s signature.

“I don’t discuss financial matters without counsel.”

“Then perhaps you’d rather discuss Vanessa Reed.”

Richard’s eyes flickered.

Claire noticed.

“She contacted our office forty-seven minutes ago,” she said. “She’s currently being interviewed.”

“She’s lying.”

“We haven’t told you what she said.”

“I know her.”

Claire leaned back in her chair.

“Do you?”

Richard said nothing.

Across town, Vanessa sat in a conference room with two attorneys and a federal investigator.

The burgundy silk robe was gone.

She now wore dark trousers and a borrowed sweater. Her makeup had been removed, and the confidence she had displayed in Emily’s doorway had disappeared.

On the table sat the encrypted drive she had taken from Richard’s safe.

“I want immunity,” Vanessa said.

“You’re not in a position to demand it,” the investigator replied.

“I can prove Richard ordered every transfer.”

“You benefited from those transfers.”

“Because he told me they were legal consulting payments.”

One of the attorneys slid a photograph across the table.

It showed Vanessa signing paperwork at a private bank.

“You opened three shell companies.”

Vanessa looked at the image.

“I did what he told me.”

“And you never wondered why a real estate executive needed his girlfriend to hide millions of dollars?”

Vanessa’s lips pressed together.

“He said he was preparing for a divorce.”

“From Emily?”

“Yes.”

“Did Emily know?”

“No.”

The investigator activated a recorder.

“Tell us everything.”

Vanessa looked toward the closed door.

For months, she had imagined replacing Emily.

She had pictured herself entering charity galas beside Richard, wearing diamonds, accepting invitations and living in the mansion.

She believed Richard would make her untouchable.

Then the SUVs arrived.

Daniel Mercer bowed to Emily.

And Vanessa realized that Richard had never understood the woman he married.

Which meant Richard was not a powerful man.

He was a careless one.

Vanessa took a breath.

“Richard planned to make Emily look financially irresponsible.”

The investigator’s expression sharpened.

“How?”

“He opened accounts using her information. Then he moved company money through them.”

“Why?”

“So that if the transfers were discovered, he could blame her.”

The room fell silent.

Vanessa continued.

“He said no one would believe a quiet wife over a successful businessman.”

“Was the forged signature his idea?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see him sign it?”

Vanessa nodded.

“I recorded him.”

She entered a password into the encrypted drive.

A list of audio files appeared.

The investigator selected the most recent recording.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“Emily never reads the company reports. She signs whatever I put in front of her.”

Vanessa’s recorded voice answered.

“What happens if she discovers the accounts?”

“She won’t.”

“And if she does?”

Richard laughed.

“Then she becomes the confused pregnant wife who made mistakes while under stress.”

The investigator paused the recording.

Vanessa stared at the table.

“Is that enough?”

“It’s a beginning.”

At St. Catherine’s Hospital, Emily listened to the same audio from her private room.

The doctor had confirmed she was not yet in labor, but she would remain under observation overnight.

Charles stood near the window.

Daniel remained beside the door.

Richard’s recorded laughter ended.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Emily looked at the ceiling.

She remembered the evenings Richard had brought documents home and asked her to sign them while she prepared dinner.

She remembered how impatient he became whenever she tried to read the details.

“Trust me,” he always said.

And she had.

“I want copies of everything,” Emily said.

Daniel nodded.

Charles turned away from the window.

“You don’t have to be involved in the investigation.”

“Yes, I do.”

“You’re eight months pregnant.”

“And he used that to make me look unstable.”

Emily sat higher against the pillows.

“If I disappear now, he’ll use my silence again.”

Her father approached the bed.

“What are you planning?”

Emily looked at the forged signature.

“I’m taking my name back.”

Her phone vibrated on the bedside table.

Richard was calling.

Daniel reached for it, but Emily stopped him.

She answered and activated the speaker.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Richard’s voice came through.

“Emily, we need to talk privately.”

“There is nothing private between us anymore.”

“You froze my accounts.”

“I protected my assets.”

“Our assets.”

“No, Richard.”

Emily looked at her father.

“You made that distinction very clear when you threw me out.”

Richard’s breathing grew uneven.

“Vanessa manipulated me.”

“She manipulated you into forging my signature?”

Silence.

Emily continued.

“She manipulated you into stealing from your company?”

“Listen to me. I can fix this.”

“You had three years to fix yourself.”

His voice softened.

It was the same tone he once used when he wanted forgiveness without accepting responsibility.

“I love you.”

Emily’s eyes closed briefly.

Once, those words had controlled her.

Now they sounded empty.

“You loved what you thought you could take from me.”

“That isn’t true.”

“Then tell the investigators the truth.”

Richard’s tone changed immediately.

“You want to send your child’s father to prison?”

Emily’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.

“You did this to yourself.”

“You think your father will always protect you?”

“No.”

Emily looked at Charles.

“I finally learned to protect myself.”

She ended the call.

Across the room, Daniel’s phone vibrated.

He read the new message and frowned.

“What is it?” Emily asked.

“The board removed Richard as chief executive.”

Charles nodded once.

“That was expected.”

Daniel did not look relieved.

“There’s more.”

He handed Emily the phone.

A photograph filled the screen.

Richard had sent an email to every member of the Vale Development board.

The subject line read:

EMILY ASHFORD IS UNFIT TO CONTROL HER OWN FINANCIAL AFFAIRS.

Attached to the email was a medical document claiming Emily had been diagnosed with a serious psychological condition.

Emily stared at it.

She had never seen the doctor whose name appeared at the bottom.

Charles’s voice became cold.

“He forged a medical report.”

Emily looked at the false diagnosis.

Richard was no longer trying to save his company.

He was trying to take control of her fortune.

And the document had been dated six months earlier.

Which meant the night in the rain had not been a sudden act of cruelty.

Richard had been preparing to remove her for months.
