Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Ledger
The woman in green, Lady Eleanor, rushed to Clara’s side, wrapping her heavy silk shawl around the trembling girl's bruised shoulders in a desperate effort to comfort her. Yet, despite her maternal gesture, Eleanor’s eyes remained glued to the exposed steel vault, fixed with a frantic intensity that bordered on pure panic. "Jonathan, stop! You swore to the council you would never open those ledgers again!" she begged, her voice trembling with an unnerving mixture of fear and deeply rooted guilt. "Think of the family name! Think of Clara! If those papers see the light of day, none of us survive the scandal!"
Ignoring her completely, Jonathan snatched a thick, bound document from the top shelf of the vault and hurled it straight at Julian’s bleeding face. The parchment scattered across the blood-stained marble floor like fallen leaves. It wasn't a standard financial record of debts or bank loans—it was a formal blood contract, yellowed with age, signed twenty years ago by Julian’s own late father. Julian’s mouth went completely dry as his eyes frantically scanned the sharp, dark calligraphy. The contract explicitly stated that the entire wealth, real estate holdings, and societal status of the Montgomery family were merely a hollow front, completely owned and funded by the Vance family empire. One single breach of conduct—one act of violence or treason against the Vance name—would immediately strip Julian's entire bloodline of every asset they owned, rendering them penniless outcasts overnight.
