Chapter 14: Into the Swell

The launching bay of the amphibious ship echoed with the roar of heavy diesel winches and the violent crashing of salt spray against the open stern gate. The rigid-hull inflatable boats bucked wildly on their davits as the crew chiefs struggled to maintain control in the pitching waters.

Emily stood on the slick metal deck, secured by a safety harness, shouting orders over the deafening scream of the wind.

"Squad one, check your harness locks! Squad two, verify thermal gear!" she commanded, her voice cutting through the gale like a razor.

Captain Hayes appeared beside her, wearing a heavy survival suit and clutching a waterproof navigation tablet. "RHIB one and two are fueled and prepped! But I have to tell you, Lieutenant, launching into this surf is suicide. The rescue box is a washing machine."

"It’s not suicide, Captain, it’s Tuesday," Emily said, throwing a faint, grim smile his way that echoed her grandfather’s stoic humor. "Get into the lead boat. I’m taking the second."

"Negative, you’re the mission commander, you stay—"

"I’m leading from the front, Robert," Emily interrupted, grabbing his shoulder firmly. "Just like Master Gunnery Sergeant Hail taught us. Now let’s go get them."

Without waiting for further argument, she climbed over the rolling gunwale and dropped into the plunging bow of the small boat. The engine roared to life with a deafening whine, and the RHIB surged backward off the davit, plunging headfirst into a towering wall of dark Pacific water.

For the next two hours, the rescue operation was a masterclass in controlled chaos. Tossed about like a cork in a bathtub, Emily’s boat fought its way through freezing rain and mountainous swells toward the coordinates of the wrecked fishing vessel. Through the blinding sheets of rain, the jagged silhouette of the coral reef loomed ahead, dark and menacing. Stranded on the broken hull of the sinking ship, huddled figures in bright orange life jackets could be seen waving frantically against the dark sky.

"Hold steady! Watch the crest!" Emily screamed, signaling the helmsman to time the approach between crashing waves.

With expert precision, the boat slid up against the rusted hull of the wreck just as a receding wave dropped the water level.

"Throw the lines! Move, move, move!" Emily yelled, reaching out with her strong, calloused hands—the same hands bearing the silver signet ring—and grabbing the jacket of the first terrified civilian, hauling him bodily into the rolling boat.
