Chapter 4: Shadows of the Past

The afternoon sun did little to warm the sterile atmosphere of the corporate boardroom on the forty-fifth floor. The massive mahogany table, polished to a mirror shine, reflected the gray clouds gathering outside. Victoria sat at the head of the table, her posture straight and uncompromising. She wore a charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit today, a stark departure from the white tuxedo of the gala, but the massive pink gemstone ring remained on her finger like a quiet badge of authority.

Seated around the table were the remaining members of the board of directors, men and women whose faces mirrored deep unease. Among them was Arthur Vance, Eleanor’s father and Victoria’s uncle by marriage—a man whose silver hair and expensive tailoring could no longer mask the desperate panic twisting his features. He leaned forward, resting his palms heavily on the polished wood, his eyes bloodshot and furious.

"This is an absolute witch hunt," Arthur hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You orchestrated this entire scandal, Victoria. You manipulated Eleanor into a public breakdown just to humiliate our branch of the family and seize total control of the voting shares!"

Victoria remained silent for a long moment, letting Arthur’s accusations hang heavily in the air. She allowed herself a slow, natural breath before speaking, her voice calm, measured, and devoid of defensive heat.

"Arthur, let us deal in facts, not theatrical conspiracy theories," Victoria said smoothly. "Your daughter walked across a room and struck me. That is a matter of public record and high-definition video. Furthermore, the forensic audit completed this morning reveals that Eleanor transferred four hundred thousand dollars from the employee pension buffer fund into a personal boutique account."

A collective murmur of shock rippled around the boardroom. Several directors shifted uncomfortably in their leather chairs, casting nervous glances between Arthur and Victoria.

Arthur slammed his fist onto the table, rattling the crystal water pitchers. "She made a momentary accounting error! It was a loan to cover temporary liquidity issues! You are weaponizing corporate protocol to destroy your own blood!"

"Embezzlement is not an accounting error, Arthur. It is a crime," Victoria stated quietly, her dark eyes locking onto his with unyielding intensity. "My father trusted this board to protect the integrity of Sterling-Vance. When he passed, he left me this ring"—she gestured slightly with her right hand, the pink gemstone catching the harsh fluorescent light—"not as a symbol of power, but as a reminder of responsibility. I will not compromise the livelihoods of thousands of honest employees to shield a thief from the consequences of her own actions."

"You have no heart, Victoria," Arthur spat bitterly, his voice cracking with desperation. "You are a cold, calculating machine wrapped in expensive clothes."

"If having a heart meant turning a blind eye to corruption and theft, then perhaps I am," Victoria replied steadily. "The board will vote on the motion to suspend Eleanor’s executive privileges and refer the audit findings to the federal prosecutor's office. All in favor?"

Slowly, one by one, hands began to rise around the table. Even some of Arthur’s closest allies hesitated before raising their hands, recognizing that the evidence was too overwhelming to ignore. Arthur stared around the room in absolute disbelief, his political capital within the company evaporating before his eyes.
