SHADOWS BEHIND THE LIE / Chapter 1 / 20

Chapter 1 - SHADOWS IN THE CHICAGO RAINThe Chicago autumn brought a bone-chilling mixture of rain and sleet. I rushed out of my luxury car, ignoring the bustling crowd on the sidewalk. The expensive diamond ring in my coat pocket slipped from my mind. Every thought, every meticulous plan for a perfect future with Amelia Brooks—the woman I was supposed to propose to in less than an hour—shattered the moment I saw Grace.

My ex-wife was standing there under the cracked metal canopy of a dilapidated bus shelter. Her thin black coat was completely soaked through, clinging to her fragile frame. But what made my heart tighten was not the sudden reappearance of the woman who had gone missing from my life three years ago, but the three young children clinging tightly to her legs. All three wore matching bright red raincoats, looking like tiny embers flickering against the gray, dreary rain.

When Grace’s eyes met mine, all color drained from her face. Panic and terror filled the gaze that used to be so gentle.

"Ryan..."

She whispered my name, but it felt as sharp as a blade cutting through the steady patter of rain on the tin roof. The smallest child looked up. I froze. He had striking gray-blue eyes—intense, serious, and sharp—the exact same eyes I had looked at in the mirror every morning for thirty-eight years. The two little girls beside him had Grace's delicate features, except one carried the stubborn, defiant smile characteristic of the Brooks men.

"How... how old are they?" I managed to ask, my voice trembling.

"Three," Grace whispered, averting her eyes.

Three. That number struck my heart like a dagger. We had divorced almost exactly three years ago. Buried memories came flooding back: Grace exhausted, Grace weeping and begging me to stay home instead of taking endless business trips, and my cold indifference, dismissing her pleas as emotional outbursts.

"Are they mine?" I stepped closer.

Grace said nothing. Her silence was far more ruthless than an explicit confession. Just then, a city bus screeched to a halt beside the curb. Grace hurriedly gathered the three children to board. The little boy with my eyes turned around to look at me one last time before the automatic doors slammed shut.

My phone vibrated relentlessly in my pocket. It was Amelia: Where are you? Everyone’s waiting.

I pulled out the velvet box, watching the diamond glint faintly in the dim streetlight, then stared at the bus disappearing into the heavy traffic. I stuffed the box back into my pocket, spun around, jumped into my car, and hit the gas.

Twenty minutes later, the bus pulled up in front of a massive complex. Grace stepped off, cradling the youngest girl in her arms. When I looked up at the sign above the main entrance, my lingering doubt vanished into pure shock.

CHICAGO CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER.

Why was Grace bringing three children to a hospital in the middle of the night? And why was the youngest girl slumping over her shoulder, too weak to stand on her own?
