Chapter 18 - The Masterclass

By winter, Valente Design Group had expanded its operations, opening a collaborative studio space dedicated to mentoring young, emerging architects—particularly women breaking into a male-dominated structural engineering field.

On a brisk Tuesday afternoon, I stood at the front of a sunlit lecture hall inside our headquarters, facing a room filled with fifty bright-eyed university seniors.

“When you design a building, the world teaches you to focus entirely on the facade,” I told the room, clicking to a slide showing the soaring glass arches of the waterfront pavilion. “You worry about how the steel curves, how the light hits the glass, and how the exterior commands the skyline.”

I paused, looking out across the eager faces.

“But if the foundation beneath the surface is compromised—if it’s built on sand, shortcuts, or compromises you made to please someone else—it doesn't matter how beautiful the glass is. The first real storm will bring the whole thing crashing down.”

A young woman in the front row raised her hand. “How do you know when a foundation is strong enough, Professor Valente?”

I smiled, remembering the cold marble floors of a suburban cage and the warm, ink-stained drafting tables of Suite 801.

“When you test it under the heaviest weight imaginable,” I answered steadily, “and it doesn't even crack.”
