Chapter 7 - The Jewelry Store Showdown

At 1:00 PM, the atmosphere inside Lumière Fine Jewelry on Michigan Avenue was quiet, luxurious, and suffocatingly tense.

The boutique smelled of polished mahogany, fresh white lilies, and money. Glass display cases gleamed under soft halogen spotlights, showcasing diamond necklaces, Swiss watches, and custom platinum bands worth more than most people earned in a decade.

Diane Vance sat on a plush velvet stool near the main counter, wearing her best fur coat, clutching her designer handbag like a shield. Beside her stood her sister, Aunt Beverly, looking increasingly nervous as she shifted her weight from foot to foot.

Standing behind the counter was Mr. Sterling, the boutique’s regional manager—a impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit whose polite smile had long since vanished.

"Mrs. Vance," Mr. Sterling said, his voice smooth, clinical, and sharp as a scalpel. "We have attempted to process the remaining seventy-two hundred dollar balance on the card you provided three separate times. The system continues to return a Code 04: Account Revoked by Primary Account Holder."

"There has been a clerical error at the bank, Mr. Sterling!" Diane insisted, her voice rising an octave, attracting the attention of two wealthy shoppers near the watch display. "My son is the Senior Vice President at Vance Global Logistics! He earns twelve thousand dollars a month! I am authorized to use that line!"

"The primary account holder is Lauren Mitchell," Mr. Sterling replied, holding up a printout from their merchant portal. "Ms. Mitchell personally phoned our corporate compliance division at 8:00 AM today. She confirmed that your secondary authorization was terminated yesterday evening and explicitly stated that any further attempts to charge that line would be reported to the State Attorney General’s Fraud Unit."

Diane’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. "How dare she! That bitter, vengeful little girl is trying to humiliate me!"

"What concerns me, Mrs. Vance," Mr. Sterling continued, sliding a legal document across the glass counter, "is the eight-thousand-dollar initial deposit you made yesterday using that same card before the revocation went through. Under our sales agreement, deposits made using unauthorized or revoked credit instruments are subject to immediate legal hold."

Aunt Beverly tugged frantically at Diane’s sleeve. "Diane... let's just leave. This is getting embarrassing."

"We are not leaving!" Diane shrieked, slamming her hand onto the glass case. "I want my necklace! My son will be here any minute with cash!"

Right on cue, the glass front doors of the boutique pushed open.

Jason rushed inside. He was drenched in sweat, his tie missing, his hair disheveled, holding an official corporate envelope from Vance Global Logistics.

"Jason!" Diane cried out, scrambling off her velvet stool. "Thank God you're here! Tell this arrogant salesman who you are! Tell him to give me my necklace!"

Jason stopped in the middle of the showroom. He looked at his mother, then at Mr. Sterling, then down at the white envelope in his hand—the envelope containing his formal notice of unpaid administrative suspension.

"Mom..." Jason rasped, his voice hollow and broken. "Stop. Just... stop."

Diane blinked, startled by his tone. "What are you talking about? Did you bring the cash from your new salary?"

"I don't have a new salary, Mom," Jason wept, dropping his head into his hands right in the middle of the luxury boutique. "They suspended me. Vance Global put me on administrative leave because of the housing paperwork and Lauren's attorney."

Aunt Beverly gasped, covering her mouth.

Diane froze, her jaw dropping open. "Suspended?! On your third day?!"

"Lauren cut off everything, Mom!" Jason sobbed, his voice echoing loudly off the marble floors. "The house isn't mine! The credit cards aren't mine! My checking account has fourteen dollars in it! I can't pay for my car! I can't pay for this store! I have nothing!"

Mr. Sterling slowly reached behind the counter, picked up a landline telephone, and pressed a three-digit extension.

"Security," Mr. Sterling spoke into the receiver, his eyes locked onto Diane. "Please step up to the main showroom. We have a non-payment dispute with a customer regarding a high-value deposit."

"Wait!" Diane panicked, her haughty demeanor completely dissolving into wild terror. "You can't call security! We're leaving! We're leaving right now!"

"The eight-thousand-dollar deposit is frozen, Mrs. Vance," Mr. Sterling stated coldly. "And if the primary account holder files a formal fraud charge by 5:00 PM, the local police department will be handling the recovery."

Two heavy-set security guards in dark suits stepped through the back doors, standing firmly near the entrance.

Jason turned and stumbled out of the store into the cold Chicago rain, leaving his mother standing beneath the halogen lights, stripped of her dignity, her diamond necklace, and her son’s stolen wealth.
