Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Light

The sun rose higher over the horizon, casting a brilliant, golden beam across the reflection pond, turning the water into liquid light.

Down on the plaza below, the front doors of the Advocacy Center opened.

A group of early-morning social workers, pediatric nurses, and young children stepped out onto the sunlit lawn, their happy, bright voices floating up the stone path on the fresh sea breeze.

I stood up from the stone bench, taking a deep, clean breath of the crisp autumn air.

For three years, I had walked through a valley of unfathomable darkness. I had faced the cold glass of hospital corridors, the terrifying geometry of corporate greed, and the monstrous betrayal of the people who were supposed to protect my home.

They had tried to make my daughter a footnote in a balance sheet. They had tried to turn her life into an administrative secret.

Instead, her name had become an empire of light.

I walked to the edge of the granite cliff, looking out over the vast, endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean stretching toward the horizon.

I touched the little silver duck pendant resting against my throat, felt the warmth of the morning sun against my face, and smiled—a real, radiant, and unbroken smile.

"We did it, sweet pea," I whispered softly into the wind.

The breeze swept up from the harbor, carrying the warm scent of pine and ocean salt, rustling the golden leaves of the garden around me like soft, gentle laughter.

The dark was gone. The ledger was closed. The light was unbroken.

And as I walked down the stone path back toward the center to begin another day of saving lives, I knew that my daughter and I were finally, completely, and forever free.
