Chapter 9 - The Bailiff’s Knock

By three o'clock that afternoon, Sarah and the kids were settled safely in the studio loft with their bags packed, far away from the toxic wreckage of the main house.
I was at my workbench sanding down a custom walnut tabletop when the crunch of heavy tires echoed up the gravel drive.
I walked to the window and looked out.
A sleek black sedan had pulled up near the front steps of the main house. Out stepped Lucas, looking haggard and desperate, followed closely by my father—his hair disheveled, his suit wrinkled, his face a mask of purple, arterial fury. Behind them rolled a local county sheriff’s cruiser.
I didn't wait for them to come looking for me. I stepped out of the studio doors, wiping the fine sawdust from my hands with a shop rag, and walked down the path toward the driveway.
Lucas spotted me first. He pointed a shaking finger in my direction, shouting across the yard.
“Maya! You insane, ungrateful little witch! Drop the charges right now or—!”
“Shut up, Lucas,” Deputy Miller’s voice boomed as he stepped out of the cruiser behind them.
My father stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes bulging as he glared at me. “This is my house!” he roared, his voice cracking with rage. “You can’t bar me from my own property! I’m Donald Vance! I built this town!”
Deputy Miller calmly stepped between my father and me, pulling a folded legal document from his tactical vest pocket and unfolding it with deliberate slowness.
“Mr. Vance, under emergency protective order docket number 4882-B, you are formally restrained from entering this parcel of land or approaching your daughter,” Miller recited crisply. “You posted bail three hours ago, but the magistrate added a geographical restriction clause due to documented witness intimidation. You have exactly ten minutes to collect your personal belongings from the main house under escort, after which you must vacate the premises entirely.”

My father’s jaw dropped. He looked from Deputy Miller to me, his chest heaving as reality finally hammered through his delusions of absolute power.
