When I arrived home from work on a Tuesday evening, Mrs. Gable met me in the foyer with a wide, glowing smile, handing me a thick, official envelope bearing the seal of the University of Chicago’s undergraduate mathematics department.
I walked straight down the hallway to the sunroom, where Sophie and Maya were deep into a study session.
“Stop for a second,” I said, holding up the envelope.
Maya looked up, her eyes widening as she recognized the university seal. She slowly stood up from the rug, her fingers trembling slightly as she took the envelope from my hand.
She slid her thumb under the paper seal, unfolded the thick letter, and scanned the text.

“Accepted,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “Full presidential scholarship in theoretical mathematics.”
Sophie let out a joyful shriek, jumping up and throwing her arms around Maya’s waist. “You did it! You’re going to college!”

I stepped forward, pulling both of them into a tight, grounding embrace. The ghosts of the past felt miles away, replaced by the warm, radiant promise of tomorrow.
