Chapter 8 - The Cold Execution

The video continued to play in absolute, crushing silence.

On the monitor, Daniela lay motionless on the cold tile for fifty-two minutes.

Fifty-two minutes.

During that entire hour, Patricia walked past her three separate times. Once to drop a stack of junk mail on the entry table. Once to adjust the thermostat in the hallway. And once to look out the front window to check if my truck was pulling into the driveway yet.

She didn't offer a towel. She didn't check her breathing. She left our child bleeding on the floor, waiting for her body to "get up on its own."

I stood in the closet alcove, my hands resting on the steel edge of the lockbox. The rage inside me had burned away completely, leaving behind a cold, absolute, and terrifying clarity.

There was no longer any room for doubt. No room for negotiation. No room for twenty-two years of memories to soften the horrific truth of what my wife was.

I clicked the EXPORT button on the mouse interface. The system chimed as the raw, unedited MP4 video file and its accompanying cryptographic time-stamp metadata transferred onto the silver USB flash drive.

Beside me, Patricia was leaning heavily against the shoe rack, her face gray, her chest heaving in short, shallow gasps. She had watched the entire video over my shoulder.

“Javier...” she whispered, her voice cracked, stripped of all its former confidence and polish. “Javier... please. You have to understand... I was under so much financial pressure... I panicked when she fell...”

I pulled the USB flash drive out of the recorder slot and slipped it into my front pocket.

Then I turned around slowly and looked at her.

“You watched her bleed for fifty-two minutes,” I said. My voice wasn't loud. It was a flat, dead whisper that sounded like stones grinding together.

“I thought she was just stunned!” Patricia sobbed, dropping to her knees on the closet carpet, reaching out to grab the hem of my jeans with both hands. “I swear to God, Javier! I didn't think her head was hurt that badly! I was going to call an urgent care clinic after I finished my phone call with the debt manager!”

I stepped backward, pulling my leg out of her grip as if her hands were covered in acid.

“Don't touch me,” I said.

“Javier, please!” she wept, her manicured fingers clawing at the carpet. “We can fix this! We can go to counseling! I’ll get a job! We can file for debt protection! Don't destroy our family over a terrible mistake!”

“You destroyed this family the second you shoved our daughter into that table,” I said, looking down at her with pure, unadulterated disgust. “Get up off the floor.”

“What... what are you going to do?” she whimpered, looking up at me with wide, terrified eyes. “Are you calling a lawyer?”

“No,” I said, pulling my smartphone out of my pocket. “I’m calling the police.”

Patricia’s eyes dilated in blind, hysterical horror. She scrambled to her feet, throwing her weight against me to try and grab my phone.

“No! Javier, no! You can’t call the police! They’ll arrest me! It will ruin my life! It will ruin Daniela’s reputation at school!”

I caught her wrists easily with one hand, twisting them back and holding her pinned against the closet wall without effort. I had spent thirty years performing heavy industrial maintenance; my grip was like an iron vise.

“You’re right,” I said coldly into her ear as she squirmed against my grip. “They are going to arrest you.”

I brought the phone to my mouth with my free hand, dialed 9-1-1, and pressed speaker.

“911 emergency, what is your location?”

“My name is Javier Ramos,” I stated, my voice steady, clear, and ringing with absolute authority. “I am at 4412 Palo Verde Lane, Paradise Valley. I need a police unit dispatched immediately to arrest my wife, Patricia Ramos, for felony aggravated assault, domestic violence, and child endangerment.”

“JAVIER, NO! STOP IT!” Patricia shrieked in the background, trying to kick my shins.

“Sir, is the suspect currently hostile?” the dispatcher asked sharply.

“She is contained,” I replied flatly. “And I have full 1080p high-definition security footage showing her assaulting our twenty-year-old daughter, stealing her personal property, and leaving her unconscious on the floor for nearly an hour today. Please send an officer immediately.”

“Units are en route, sir. Stay on the line.”

I ended the call, set the phone on the shelf, and looked down at my wife as she collapsed against the wall, weeping hysterically into her silk sleeves.
