Chapter 13 - The Unraveling Note

The side door of my office opened, and a quiet, middle-aged man in a gray suit walked inside carrying a leather briefcase.
Arthur Vance frowned, glancing back. "Who the hell is this?"
"This is Thomas Hendricks," I explained softly. "He was the chief forensic auditor for the Wisconsin State Banking Commission in 2022. And three days ago, my legal team hired him to trace the original banking origin of that $200,000 seed check."
Arthur’s hand tightened noticeably around the head of his ivory cane.
Hendricks opened his briefcase, pulled out three certified banking ledgers, and set them on the desk beside the convertible note.
"On March 14, 2022," Hendricks declared in a clear, clinical voice, "a cashier's check for $200,000 was issued to Vanguard Applied Engineering’s initial patent holding account. That check was drawn from a secondary account under the name Vance Capital Holdings."
Hendricks turned a page.
"However, three hours prior to that draft being issued, $200,000 was transferred into Vance Capital Holdings from a commingled escrow account belonging to the United States Army Casualty Assistance & Family Support Fund—specifically, the emergency survivor grant account designated for the minor dependents of Sergeant Leo Vance during his extended medical coma in Landstuhl."
The air in the office went completely dead.
Arthur’s lead attorney blinked, his eyes darting frantically down to the ledger pages. "What... what did you say?"
"Victor Vance didn't invest his family’s money in my initial patents, Arthur," I said, my voice dropping into a register so dark and lethal that even the attorneys took a half-step back. "When I was lying unconscious in a military ICU in Germany, Victor used his forged power-of-attorney—the one Brenda signed—to raid my daughters' emergency military survivor trust. He took $200,000 of my children's government benefit money, funneled it through your family company, and wrote a check back to my early research account so he could claim a quiet four-percent hook in my future."
Arthur Vance stared at the ledgers. The color drained from his weathered face, leaving him looking frail, old, and hollow.

"He used federal casualty funds," Hendricks concluded, sliding a second document across the table. "Which constitutes federal embezzlement of military benefits, wire fraud, and grand larceny under 18 U.S.C. § 641. Because Vance Capital Holdings was the intermediate entity, every officer of that holding company—including Arthur Vance—is named as a co-conspirator in the federal criminal referral we submitted to the Department of Justice two hours ago."
