Chapter 5 - The Forbidden Recording

I stood frozen in the swirling snow as the ambulance snowcat revved its engine, preparing to transport her down the mountain to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver.
A senior Search and Rescue officer walked up to me, his heavy snow suit caked in ice. In his gloved hands, he held a sealed plastic evidence bag.
Inside sat Clara’s damaged, waterlogged smartphone, its casing cracked down the center.
“Mr. Black?” the officer asked, his voice grave. “We recovered her primary gear from the maintenance station where she survived the last forty-eight hours. She dragged herself six miles on a fractured tibia through an active storm to reach that bunker.”
I stared at the plastic bag, tears freezing on my cheeks. “She’s alive. God, she’s alive...”
“She is a remarkably resilient woman,” the officer agreed. Then he hesitated, holding the bag closer to his chest. “Sir... there’s something else. Before her phone battery died completely inside that bunker this morning, the system local-stored a second video recording. It didn't sync to your cloud network because there was no cell service.”
My heart stopped. “A second video?”
I reached out my hand to take the evidence bag.
Suddenly, a frail, trembling hand reached out from the rear doors of the medical snowcat.
Clara had pushed herself up against the gurney. Her bloodshot eyes were fixed on the officer, her gloved fingers locking tightly around the rescue worker's wrist with a sudden, desperate strength.
“Please...” Clara whispered, her voice carrying a terrifying, desperate urgency that cut through the roar of the wind.

She stared directly at me—her eyes cold, hollow, and completely devoid of the love that had sustained me for eleven years.
“Don't let him see that one.”
