Chapter 8 - The Paperwork of Treason

By six o’clock that evening, I was sitting in a soft leather armchair inside the 9th District Detective Division on 35th Street.

The room smelled of stale coffee and floor wax. A fan buzzed softly in the corner, blowing cool air over my face. I was wearing a clean navy shirt Daniel had brought from his truck, and an ice pack rested against my swollen cheek.

Sitting across from me at a wide metal desk was Detective Sarah Vance—a sharp, gray-haired investigator from the Financial Crimes Unit—alongside my family attorney and long-time friend, Frank Callahan.

Frank set three heavy black binders on the desk. His face was grim, his knuckles white as he tapped the top folder.

“Robert,” Frank said softly, his voice heavy with anger. “We just finished running the forensic audit on your accounts through the State’s Attorney’s office. It’s worse than we thought.”

I took a slow sip of cold water. “How bad, Frank?”

“Javier didn't just redirect your monthly four thousand three hundred dollar CFD pension,” Frank revealed, opening the first binder. “Two weeks after you signed that Limited Power of Attorney, he used a forged secondary amendment to open a line of credit against this house.”

Detective Vance pulled a certified bank document from the folder, sliding it across the desk toward me.

“Four hundred and twenty thousand dollars, Captain Miller,” Detective Vance said flatly. “That’s the full appraised equity value of your home on Maple Street. He withdrew the entire cash amount in three separate wire transfers over the last twenty-one days.”

My chest felt like a ten-ton roof beam had just collapsed onto my ribs. “Where... where did the money go?”

“Three hundred thousand went into a private holding account in Naples, Florida,” Frank said. “He was buying a luxury condo near the beach under a newly formed LLC registered in his brother’s name. The remaining hundred and twenty thousand was spent on high-end electronics, custom suits, luxury lease payments on a new BMW, and an eight-thousand-dollar deposit on a diamond necklace for Gabriela.”

I leaned back in the chair, closing my eyes as the sheer scale of the betrayal washed over me.

Thirty-eight years of crawling through smoke, breathing toxic fumes, breaking my knees on roof trusses, and saving every penny so my wife and children would never have to worry about a roof over their heads. And in ninety days, a parasite with a fountain pen and a smile had stripped my life down to the bare brick.

“Can we recover the house, Frank?” Daniel asked from where he stood near the door, his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

“The house is safe, Danny,” Frank assured him, turning a page. “Because the Power of Attorney was obtained through fraudulent misrepresentation and physical coercion—and because we have Javier’s explicit taped confession—the State’s Attorney is filing an immediate Lis Pendens freeze on all associated accounts. The Florida property is being seized under civil asset forfeiture tomorrow morning.”

Detective Vance closed her notebook with a heavy thud.

“Javier Ramos is looking at twelve to fifteen years in State custody,” Detective Vance declared. “Class 1 Felony Financial Exploitation of an Elderly Person, Aggravated Kidnapping, and Identity Theft. He won't see the outside of a penitentiary until he’s nearly fifty.”

She looked up at me, her expression softening with genuine respect.

“And as for your daughter, Captain... the prosecutor is currently deciding whether to charge her as an active co-conspirator or a secondary accessory.”
